Pros of Hydrogen Cars
- Zero Emissions: The only byproduct emitted from the tailpipe is water vapor.
- Fast Refueling: Refueling a hydrogen tank takes only 3 to 5 minutes, offering the same convenience as traditional gas cars.
- Long Driving Range: A single tank provides a range of about 300 to 400 miles, making long-distance travel easy.
- Weather Resilience: Hydrogen fuel cells handle extreme cold and hot weather better than standard lithium-ion batteries, losing less overall range.
Cons of Hydrogen Cars
- Low Energy Efficiency: Converting electricity to hydrogen and back to electricity in a fuel cell loses a lot of energy; hydrogen cars use only about 30% to 35% of the input energy, compared to 80% for battery electric cars.
- Lack of Infrastructure: There is a severe shortage of public hydrogen refueling stations outside of very limited areas (like parts of California).
- High Cost: The vehicles themselves are expensive, and producing, compressing, and transporting hydrogen fuel is costly.
- Production Emissions: Most commercial hydrogen is currently made using fossil fuels, which creates carbon emissions unless strictly produced via green electrolysis using renewable energy.
